Welcome to Springburn Parish Church

Boys Brigade.

Each week The Boys' Brigade works with thousands of young people, many of whom have no other connection with the Church. Today we are working with over 60,000 children & young people in over 1500 companies (groups) in the UK & Republic of Ireland every week.

The Boys' Brigade provides a balanced programme of activities for children and young people from 5 to 18 years old. These resources have been developed to help volunteer youth leaders work in a relevant and creative way. We hope through these programmes they will be able to make a positive contribution to a young person's life and be able to share their faith.

Our work is split into age groups as follows:

Where have we come from?

·         The Boys' Brigade has been around for over 130 years. Our Founder Sir William Alexander Smith, included in our Object "The Promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-Respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness" and that has not been changed.

·         What has changed is how we go about promoting that object. We recognise that the influences surrounding our young people are not always helpful and that too many lose control at great cost to themselves, their families and the community. The answer is to catch the energy and enthusiasm of youth and to channel it purposefully.

·Our Object

·The Object of The Boys' Brigade is:

·         "The advancement of Christ's kingdom among Boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness."

 Our Motto & Emblem

·The Boys' Brigade Motto is:

·Sure & Steadfast'

·The motto is taken from the bible, the book of Hebrews, Chapter 6, Verse 19.

HISTORY OF BOYS BRIGADE IN SPRINGBURN

A short History of the Boys’ Brigade Companies associated with the Churches now forming Springburn Parish Church.

25th Glasgow Boys' Brigade                                          Formed 10 May 1898

The 25th Glasgow Company celebrated its centenary of formation in Springburn on 10 May 1998.

The original 25th Glasgow Company was founded on 27 February 1886 at the Bishop Street Mission School, but by 1895 it had been suspended. The Glasgow Battalion then reallocated the 25th Glasgow number to a new Company, which had been formed in Cowlairs Parish Church.

This Company had met the then requirement for the formation of a Boys' Brigade Company which was that it had had to have had a regular probationary series of six meeting at which 30 boys between the age range of 12 and 17 years of age were in attendance with an average attendance of not less than 20 Boys. Company organisation and Company Drill combined with Physical Training, First Aid (Ambulance) work and other exercises of value in training Boys were to be used as a means of securing the interest of the Boys, banding them together in the work of the Brigade, and promoting amongst them such habits as the Brigade was designed to form. After this statutory requirement was completed and the application form lodged, the Company was officially enrolled on the strength of Glasgow Battalion on 10 May 1898.

The Company was continually present in Cowlairs Parish Church until, with the redevelopment of Springburn in the late 1960's it was temporarily suspended during session 1975-76, having previously amalgamated with the 238 Company of Somerville church in 1964-65 when that church united with Cowlairs. With the unification of the various churches in Springburn in 1978 to form Springburn Parish church, the two remaining B. B. Companies within the parish area after the amalgamation of the Churches, the 148th (Sighthill) and 188th (Johnston,) decided to amalgamate but take the number 25 as it was the oldest continuous Company within the Parish. The "new" 25th Glasgow came into being in September 1978. Two of the staff from the previous 148th and 188th companies are still serving officers since the reformation of the 25 in 1978. May 1998 therefore represented both the centenary of the original 25th Glasgow within the Springburn Parish area and 20 years service in the "new" Springburn Parish.
